Understanding Kratom Strains: Unveiling Marketing Myths and Production Realities

Are you really getting what you're paying for?  Let's look at the realities of the kratom industry, it's marketing hype, and why your source matters.

The Marketing of Kratom Strains

Kratom, a botanical product sourced from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, is often marketed in a variety of excessively elaborate strains, each purported to have unique effects. However, the reality of kratom production, particularly in major supplying countries like Indonesia, reveals a simpler and more uniform process than marketing might suggest.

The diversity of kratom strain names—such as Bali, Maeng Da, Super Green, Elephant, Horn, Bentuage, Dragon, etc.—plays a significant role in marketing the product. These names are often inspired by exotic locales or qualities that suggest superior or unique effects. Despite the appealing narratives, many of these strain names do not correspond to distinct botanical varieties or specific cultivation methods. They are, in large part, marketing tools designed to entice buyers by promising a wide variety of experiences.  We have heard endless stories and solicitations by farmers or distributors that offer us more than 10 different strain names in whatever color of the rainbow we want.  Make up any name and they magically have that “strain” in a variety of different colors.  It’s business like this we stear clear of.

Production Realities

In reality, the production of kratom is much more homogenized. Kratom farming typically involves the bulk harvesting of leaves from multiple farms at specific times of the year.  White Kratom is harvested while the leaf growth is young, Green Kratom at the middle peak of growth, and Reds are harvested at the very late stage of growth when the veins of the leaf material start to turn red.  Once harvested, these leaves are combined in large quantities—thousands of tons of leaf material are processed together. This mass production process involves drying approximately five kilograms of fresh leaves to produce just one kilogram of kratom powder.

Given the scale of production and the resources available, it is logistically improbable to segregate and process the leaves according to the multitude of strain names found in the marketplace or offered by these social media pedlers. The distinctions among these so-called strains are less about the inherent properties of the leaves and more about post-harvest processing and branding strategies.

Understanding What You’re Buying

For consumers, it’s crucial to understand that while different kratom products might be labeled with various strain names, these distinctions often do not reflect significant differences in the plant material itself. The effects of kratom are more consistently influenced by the maturity of the leaves at harvest—categorized broadly as white, green, and red—which correspond to the stages of growth rather than to the actual color of leaves or veins.  Some trees show a vein color change as leaves mature which make judging havest cycles easier but this in no way changes the actual color of dried kratom powder.

Correspondence of Colors to Growth Cycles and Their Effects

  • White Kratom: Harvested during the early stages of leaf maturity, white kratom is known for its lower alkaloid content relative to more mature leaves. This results in a product that is often associated with increased energy and alertness, similar to the effect of caffeine. White kratom is typically used during the morning or when intense concentration is needed.
  • Green Kratom: As the leaves reach mid-maturity, they are harvested to produce green kratom. This strain contains a balance of alkaloids, providing a moderate effect that combines mild stimulation with enhanced mental clarity and physical comfort. Green kratom is considered versatile, suitable for both daytime and evening use, and is often chosen for social interactions or to alleviate mild discomfort.
  • Red Kratom: The leaves that reach full maturity are used to make red kratom. These leaves have the highest alkaloid content, contributing to their strong sedative properties. Red kratom is traditionally used for relaxation and is favored in the evening to help unwind or prepare for sleep. It’s also the preferred choice for those seeking natural relief from physical discomfort.

Proper Storage and Appearance of Kratom.  Hint: Your Kratom Should Be Green.

When it comes to assessing the quality of kratom, one of the key indicators is its color. Freshly dried kratom should always retain a vibrant green hue, which signifies that it has been processed and stored correctly.  This is true regardless of its designation as a white, green, or red.  Remember, the effects and strength of kratom is based on its maturity, not minor variation in perceived vein color. The green color indicates that the kratom is fresh and has preserved its natural alkaloids, which are responsible for its effects.

However, kratom is sensitive to environmental factors such as sunlight and air. Exposure to these elements can lead to deterioration and oxidation of the plant material. As kratom oxidizes, its color transitions from green to reddish brown and then finally to a bleached white. This change not only affects its appearance but can also diminish its potency and alter its effects. The browning of kratom is a natural process that indicates aging and prolonged exposure to air and light.  This is unfortunately what many customers have been led to believe is white and red kratom, old oxidised kratom.

To maintain the quality and efficacy of kratom, it is crucial to store it properly. Kratom should be kept in airtight containers away from direct sunlight and in a cool, dark place. Proper storage helps in preserving its green color and essential properties, extending its shelf life, and ensuring that it remains as effective as when it was first processed.

Source Matters

The kratom industry’s marketing practices have created a complex tapestry of strain names that may not necessarily match the botanical reality. Consumers should be aware of these marketing tactics and base their purchasing decisions on reputable sources and transparent practices rather than solely on strain names. Understanding the actual production process and the general effects of leaf maturity can help guide more informed choices in using kratom.
